What is it about?

Start4Change (S4C) is an interdisciplinary training project for young people, inspired by the encyclicals Laudato Si' and Fratelli Tutti.

The goal is to engage participants and encourage them to reflect on the social changes advocated in these documents. This year, S4C welcomed students aged 18 to 30 from four different faculties at KU Leuven (Engineering, Architecture, Philosophy, and Theology), alumni, employees, and job seekers.

Participants from Italy included Sophia University Loppiano near Florence and the Salesian Pontifical University in Rome. Start4Change (S4C) not only encourages young people to reflect but also acts as a catalyst for the team of facilitators, which includes both Focolare members and external partners.


🎯 Goals:


  • to stimulate in-depth reflection on the necessary societal changes,
  • to build bridges between disciplines, cultures, and statuses (students, alumni, young workers, job seekers),
  • and totranslate ideas into concrete projects that benefit society.

🌐 A unique experience:


  • an immersion trip to Italy (Florence, Loppiano, Assisi, Rome),
  • meetings with other students and participating institutions, and
  • a presentation of the results of the S4C inclusion projects.

Past editions

Au cours de la première semaine de février 2025, les jeunes ont entrepris un voyage d'immersion en Italie, où ils ont été rejoints par des étudiants de l'Istituto Universitario Sophia (Loppiano), de l'Università Pontificia Salesiana (Rome) et de l'Université Pontificale Urbanienne (Rome). Leur programme de voyage comprenait des visites à Loppiano (Université Sophia, Polo Lionello), Florence (Centro Internazionale Studenti Giorgio La Pira), Assise (Mouvement Laudato Si’) et Rome (Borgo Laudato Si’ Castel Gandolfo et le Dicastère pour le Service du Développement Humain Intégral).


Start4Change (S4C) est organisé par Dialogue4All, la KULeuven, le Netwerk Rechtvaardigheid en Vrede, Ecokerk et Kamino.

Le projet a débuté par deux séances de réflexion interactives sur les deux encycliques, tenues entre octobre et décembre 2024. De février à mai, les participants de Start4Change travaillent sur un projet pratique : trouver des solutions à des défis sociétaux concrets, tels que la précarité énergétique dans les quartiers multiculturels. Un exemple en est la rénovation d'un bâtiment dans le quartier Rabot à Gand, avec la question de savoir comment la technologie, y compris l'intelligence artificielle, peut être utilisée de manière plus inclusive. L'accent est mis sur l'inclusion de tous et la recherche de solutions bénéfiques pour la société. Les résultats du projet pratique seront présentés lors d'une troisième séance de réflexion interactive, qui se tiendra à Gand le 22 mai 2025 de 17h à 19h en présence de notre archevêque Terlinden. Le dialogue entre les jeunes, l'équipe de facilitateurs et l'archevêque sera central.


Ce projet a pu démontrer que l'influence du pape François s'étend au-delà des cercles catholiques et résonne chez les jeunes de divers horizons, y compris les musulmans et les non-croyants. 


L'équipe de facilitateurs a constaté que Start4Change a développé une méthodologie efficace qui rassemble des personnes aux compétences et aux horizons divers pour réfléchir ensemble et avec les jeunes à leur rôle dans le monde d'aujourd'hui et de demain.
